Sales letters
Sales letter writer
Thinking of hiring a sales letter writer? A good sales letter works like a salesperson who never sleeps — promoting your business around the clock, to many prospects at once.
Sales letters began in direct mail, where marketers sent long-form copy to generate revenue. One of the most famous, the Wall Street Journal letter about two young men, pulled in profits for decades. What made it work was not clever writing for its own sake — it was an understanding of sales psychology: people buy on emotion and justify with logic. That is the heart of direct response.
The sales letter formula
Most persuasive sales copy contains some or all of these elements:
- An attention-capturing headline
- A story-driven opening
- Key benefits in the body
- A strong, specific offer
- Credible proof and testimonials
- A clear call to action
Writers arrange these differently, but the elements are always there. The formula alone is not enough, though — you still need the right words and tone to engage and persuade the reader toward the one action that matters: buying.
How to engage a sales letter writer
Look at track record and experience in your industry, and check the writer’s portfolio to judge their ability. As a rule of thumb, the more experienced the writer, the better the copy — and the more premium the fee. Unless you are confident writing converting copy yourself, this is worth outsourcing to an expert. A sales letter is a marketing tool that has to earn its keep, and your business cannot afford lost sales from weak copy.
Frequently asked questions
What does a sales letter writer do?
Writes long-form persuasive copy — rooted in sales psychology — designed to move a reader to buy, whether in print or online.
Are sales letters still effective?
Yes. The channel has moved online, but the principles — headline, story, benefits, offer, proof, call to action — still convert.
Should I write my own or hire?
If you are confident writing copy that converts, write it. If not, hire an expert — a weak sales letter costs you sales.
