What is direct response copywriting?
Direct-response copywriting is writing designed to make one specific reader take one specific action now, such as buying, signing up or replying, and to measure whether they did. Unlike brand or awareness writing, every line is accountable to a result. It is the foundation of sales pages, emails, and ads that can be tested and improved.
Types of copywriting, explained
“Copywriting” is really a family of related skills. Knowing the differences helps you learn the right one, or brief the right writer.
- Direct-response — writing built to drive an immediate, measurable action.
- Creative — brand and concept-led writing that builds awareness and feeling.
- SEO — copy structured to rank in search while still persuading.
- Website and online — homepage, landing and site copy that guides visitors to act.
- Email — sequences and campaigns that nurture a list and sell.
- Advertising and social — short, sharp copy for ads on search, Facebook and beyond.
- Business and B2B — writing for considered, multi-step purchases.
- Direct mail and print — sales letters, mailers and printed materials.
- Product — descriptions and packaging that help a product sell itself.
