How to use the Random Roles Assigner Deck
Set how many cards you want, then fill in each card with text, an image, or both — a role, a name, a task, a prompt, whatever you need. Press Generate & Shuffle Deck and the cards are shuffled into a random order and dealt face-down. Click or tap a card (or press Enter or Space when it is focused) to flip it and reveal what is underneath. Each reveal is recorded in the draw log on the side, where you can type a note against any card. When you are done, export the whole log as a spreadsheet-ready CSV file.
What each option does
- Number of cards: choose anywhere from 2 to 50 using the slider or the number box. Change it any time before you generate the deck — the card rows grow or shrink to match, and anything you have already typed is kept.
- Card layout (Grid or Deck): choose how the cards are shown. Grid spreads every card out so you can pick any one; Deck stacks them like a real pack, dealing from the top with a discard pile beside it. You can pick either at any card count — large decks default to the Deck view and small ones to Grid until you choose.
- Discard card after selection: when switched on, each card leaves the deck once it has been revealed, so you deal through the pack without repeats until every card is gone. Revealed cards collect in a discard pile you can click to review in draw order. Switch it off to keep cards in play — you can flip them back face-down and draw again as often as you like, and end the session yourself with the End Session button.
- Custom back-of-card image: optional. Upload one image to use as the back of every card. Leave it blank and the deck uses a clean patterned back.
- Bulk image upload: drag and drop a batch of images onto the drop zone, or click to select several at once, and they are spread across the cards for you. Drop more images than the card count and the extras are ignored at random; drop fewer and they are reused to fill every card. You can still fine-tune any single card afterwards.
- Shuffle: reshuffles only the cards you have not drawn yet, with a quick riffle animation. Cards already revealed and their log entries stay exactly where they are.
- Back to settings: while dealing, jump back to the setup screen at any time to change the card count, content or options, then generate a fresh deck — no need to deal every card first.
- Draw log and notes: every revealed card appears here in the order it was drawn, with a note box you can edit at any time. Handy for recording who got what, or jotting a comment against each result.
- Export Log: downloads a CSV with the draw order, each card’s text or image filename, and your notes — ready to open in Excel, Numbers or Google Sheets.
Ways to use it
- Assigning roles at random: put a role on each card — timekeeper, note-taker, presenter, scribe — and let each student or team member draw one. Turn on Discard so no role is handed out twice.
- Group and pair formation: make cards for tables, teams or breakout rooms and deal them out to sort a class quickly and fairly.
- Random prompts and questions: load discussion questions, writing prompts or vocabulary onto the cards and flip one to start an activity. Keep Discard off to reuse the same deck across groups.
- Decisions and draws: settle who goes first, pick an order of play, or run a small lucky draw — the log gives you an auditable record of the order things came out.
- Flashcards and reveals: use images for the cards and reveal them one at a time for a memory game, a picture prompt, or a guessing activity.
