Ten minutes, visible to the whole room
Ten minutes is long enough for real work and short enough that nobody drifts: a do-now task, a reading, a first draft, a group planning the thing they are about to present. It is also the standard length of \”we will come back together in ten minutes\”, a promise that goes badly when nobody is counting.
Start it and put it where the class can see it — fullscreen on the projector, or popped out into a small window that floats above your slides and PDFs while you keep teaching. Add a label like \”First draft\” and it shows under the digits and in the browser tab. The ring turns amber at two minutes left and alert at one, so students pace themselves without you interrupting to say so.
